Classical Music Playlist, July 21, 2021
In 1912, composer Richard Strauss and his operatic librettist conceived a project that was a combination of stage play and opera; first, a revival of the 1670 play by Molière, “Le Bourgeois gentilhomme,” followed by the Strauss opera “Ariadne auf Naxos.” It all turned out to be too cumbersome (and expensive) to produce and tried to appeal to too many tastes (and received hisses from the audience who didn’t care about parts of the over six hour production). So the play and opera were separated, all of it revised and re-premiered, and Strauss then compiled a Suite from the music which we now know as his delightful “Bourgeois Gentleman Suite.” And that’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
