A Quintet of Trout! | Image: US Fish and Wildlife Service [public domain]
A quintet of trout is not what the “Trout Quintet” is about! Rather than five fish, Franz Schubert's delightful Quintet needs a piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass and… a set of variations on Schubert’s earlier song “The Trout.” These were the requests made to him from an amateur cellist who commissioned the work: replace a string quartet’s typical 2nd violin with a bass and somewhere in the work include variations on the song’s lighthearted melody. Twenty-two year old Schubert dove right into the assignment and the sunny result reflects his cheerful mood that summer of 1819 spent with good friends in what he described as “inconceivably lovely” countryside. Listen for the variations in the 4th movement when you tune in for Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet as your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
