Though it would be not until March 1945 that the center of Vienna, including theaters, music halls and museums, would take a very bad hit of bombing during WW II, stress of the war was a constant challenge for German composer Richard Strauss. He moved to Vienna in 1941, had already been and continued to try to save Jewish relatives (not always successfully), was experiencing strife and only conditional temporary acceptance from Berlin and Hitler and by early 1943 (at nearly 79 years old) a weakened Strauss suffered a bout of the flu. During this time he began work on his Sonatina #1 for 16 Wind Instruments which would premiere in June 1944. As he began composing the work while ill, he gave the Sonatina the subtitle, “From an Invalid’s Workshop” and it’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
