In his youth, Dmitri Shostakovich was advanced for his age in music and in life. Born in 1906 and musically gifted, he also matured early from realities of Russia's 1917 revolution that abruptly changed centuries of Romanov rule into a Soviet system. And while conservative musical teaching told him that music basically couldn't advance past about 1905, he absorbed new early 20th century ideas. As this child born in Tsarist Russia grew into an intelligent young man in a Soviet system of civil war and deprivation, opinion and biting humor found its way into his music. A conservatory graduation requirement, Shostakovich's First Symphony enjoyed a spectacular 1926 premiere in Leningrad and established his reputation abroad the following year. It's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
