Maurice Ravel said that a Concerto should not aim to be profound and dramatic but lighthearted and sparkling. It was with this idea that he composed his Piano Concerto in G-major that premiered in 1932. Opening famously with a whip crack (or a slapstick from the percussion section), and inspired by America's jazz and his Basque ancestry, Ravel's Piano Concerto stands as a cheerful farewell from a composer who would soon fall so ill he could no longer compose. This was his penultimate composition and it was hailed as a masterpiece wherever it was performed across the globe soon after its premiere. It's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
