Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) in 1866
Nationalism became an expression of unique cultural heritage for composers in the Romantic era of the 19th century. This was felt strongly in the Scandinavian countries where Copenhagen was a center of the movement and where Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg was living when he composed his only Piano Concerto at age 25. The Copenhagen premiere in 1869 was a triumphant success with later performances in Norway, Germany and England and broader international success thereafter. Though Grieg became known for his expression of Norwegian spirit in his songs, piano and other music, he rarely quoted existing folk songs directly but preferred to craft original melodic patterns and rhythms suggestive of Norway. For example, the Piano Concerto’s opening three-note motif, repeated multiple times descending through octaves in quick succession, is characteristic of Norwegian folk music. Trivia: Grieg’s Piano Concerto was the first piano concerto ever recorded, but only six minutes of it due to the limited recording technology of 1909. Hear the entire 30 minute concerto in a splendid modern digital recording as your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
