American composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) | photo by Rayhuff-Richter
The 1894 “Gaelic Symphony” by Amy Beach was the first symphony composed and published by a female American composer. That’s the same time that Czech composer Antonín Dvořák was teaching in the U.S. and advised American composers to look to Native American and African American tunes to create a uniquely “American” sounding classical music. Amy Beach looked at Dvořák’s “American” music and read his advice to American composers, but as her ancestors were of Irish & Scottish descent she based her symphony on tunes from her own heritage; thus the title, “Gaelic” Symphony. She nonetheless helped to create an “American Melting Pot” unique sound. In later works, she did look to Native American music, Inuit in particular, as well as music from the African American tradition for inspiration. Her “Gaelic Symphony” was very well received - considered as good as anything composed in America at the time - and established Beach as a prominent composer in the US and Europe. The "Gaelic Symphony" by Amy Beach is today's Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
