The late French musicologist and critic Claude Rostand described French composer Francis Poulenc as "half monk, half rascal." This certainly describes his life, personality and music. Artistic and religious, his music ranges from parody to piety; from merry to melancholic. Coming of age in the free-wheeling Paris of the 1920s he was a member of Les Six, that group of six French composers (more a friendship than a formal school of thought on music) who in 1920 bonded around the forward-thinking artistic ideas of Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau. After decades of alternating free-spirited, irreverent and impudent works with solemn and reverent religious compositions, in 1950 he combined the dramatic and the droll in his Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor. It’s a high-spirited work that he described as his “low-brow” concerto; that is, a guilty pleasure written not to appeal to any intellectual pretension but music written solely for the sake of entertainment. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
