Classical Music Playlist, August 9, 2021
The likes of it had never been heard before. And for chamber music to evolve in such an inventive and mature manner from a sixteen year old astonished the music world and put the composer’s name alongside all the great composers of any age. Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat unified two string quartets in a symphonic manner that brilliantly arranged nearly every possible combination of 8 instruments to render a complex variety of sound. Besides the structure, the content also charmed audiences. The Scherzo movement, evocative of an ethereal world of fairies and spirits, became a standalone work. Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat major is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
