Just as Gabriel Fauré restrained public exhibitions of his personal emotions, so too he kept his music subtle in its expression rather than freely melodramatic like many late 19th century composers. But this is not to say that he was unemotional; his style was simply more refined. He said to a student: “To express that which is within you with sincerity, in the clearest and most perfect manner, would seem to me the ultimate goal of art.” Always lyrical rather than dramatic, in his Piano Quartet #1 Fauré shows delicacy and refinement of techniques rather than flaunting instrumental display. Nuanced modulation, subtle rhythmic shifts, and languid melodies that stretch out over time are some of Fauré’s methods of restrained expression. That all said, attention is nonetheless often called to the slow adagio movement of his first Piano Quartet. While beginning this composition he had been wooing, then proposed to, a young woman. All seemed fine (to him) for four months until she broke off the engagement (apparently confessing later that she found Fauré more intimidating than endearing). Analyses of his Piano Quartet can’t resist mentioning that the mournful tone of the adagio is likely his expression of sadness and romantic disillusionment. The Piano Quartet #1 by Gabriel Fauré is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
