In 1954 the very busy Leonard Bernstein fulfilled two long-delayed commitments: a commission for the Koussevitzky Foundation and the promise to his violinist friend Isaac Stern for a new concerto. He fulfilled both of these with one composition: "Serenade, After Plato's 'Symposium'." Plato's dialogue contains seven speeches about love from notable men such as Aristophanes and Socrates. Each speaker begins with points from the previous speaker and likewise, said Bernstein about his music, "each movement evolves out of elements in the preceding one.” The composer noted that the music has “no literal program,” but the work “resulted from a rereading of Plato’s charming dialogue, The Symposium.... It's really a love piece.” And it's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm featuring violinist Hilary Hahn.
