Classical Music Playlist, August 17, 2021
Audiences in 1917 had already come to know Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 2nd and 3rd piano concertos, his 1st & 2nd symphonies, a couple operas (including “Aleko,” admired by Tchaikovsky) and numerous works for solo piano, and as a celebrated pianist and conductor, before he re-introduced his Piano Concerto #1. Written originally in 1891 at age 17-18, he made major revisions 26 years later at about age 44 that demonstrate his growth as a composer. Audiences, he said, were polite in listening to this “new” concerto about which he said “I have rewritten my First Concerto; it is really good now. All the youthful freshness is there, and yet it plays itself so much more easily.” But, he said about audience reception of it, “They do not protest, but I can see by their faces that they would prefer the Second or Third [piano concertos]." Rachmaninoff’s (revised) First Piano Concerto, that he wished audiences appreciated more, is your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
