Even a hundred years after the Declaration of Independence, American musical education was still in its infancy. But just as “the shot heard round the world” in 1775 happened in New England, so too did the beginnings of formal music education in America about a hundred years later. Through the 1800s American composers were still largely receiving formal music education in Europe or from European immigrants. But in the increasingly fertile musical life in Boston, such as with the founding of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881 and earlier events, new traditions of composition, composers and education were blooming. "The Boston Six" were an unofficial group (so labeled today by historians) of composer friends based in the area. The eldest of these was John Knowles Paine. Born in Maine in 1839, Paine studied in Europe and returned to the US in 1861, settling in Boston where he soon began an association with Harvard University first as organist with a University chapel. In 1869 he was awarded an honorary Music degree which enabled him to join the Harvard faculty, being named full professor by 1874. This made him the first academic professor of music at any American university and Paine developed the first university music curriculum in the United States which would become a model for later American universities. His first symphony from 1876 was also the first ever composed by an American. The Symphony #1 by America’s father of music education, John Knowles Paine, is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
