Paul Whiteman wanted George Gershwin to write a piece of music for his jazz band, and the famous “Rhapsody In Blue” was the result. The 1924 original was for solo piano with jazz band. It was Whiteman's pianist and chief arranger, Ferde Grofé, who orchestrated the work; three times, in fact: the original orchestration for jazz band in 1924, in 1926 for a larger "theater orchestra," and finally in 1942 into the full orchestral score that you probably know and has usually been recorded. Today at 2:00 pm for your Midday Masterpiece, hear the original 1924 jazz band version.
