Danish composer Carl Nielsen having fun in 1887 showing four of his temperaments.
Symphonic movements have been inspired by such things as colors, elements of nature and, in the 2nd Symphony of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, temperaments of personality. Theories dating from as far back as 400 B.C. suggest that there are four fundamental personality types: Sanguine (enthusiastic, active, and social), Choleric (short-tempered, fast, or irritable), Melancholic (analytical, wise, and quiet), and Phlegmatic (relaxed and peaceful). Imagine what people you know might fit these personality types as you listen to the Symphony #2, "The Four Temperaments," by Carl Nielsen today at 2:00 pm for your Midday Masterpiece.
