While English composer Ralph ["Rafe"] Vaughan Williams conceded that some movements might evoke reminiscences and moods of London locations and activity, he remained adamant that his "A London Symphony" - often referred to unofficially as his "Symphony #2" - was not "program" music that depicted such scenes but was "absolute music." That is, music without specific descriptive passages. He even wrote that to avoid the impression of it being program music, he should have more accurately titled it, "Symphony by a Londoner." After its initial premiere in 1914, Vaughan Williams continued to revise it until he finally left it in its final form in 1936. "A London Symphony" is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
