Spain's King Charles III [Carlos III] by Francisco Goya
Looking for a new production, Paris-based Ballets Russes impresario Serge Diaghilev in 1917 met in Spain with composer Manuel de Falla and agreed on a new setting of the Spanish comic novella El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat). Very simply, the story involves a miller, his faithful wife, and a lecherous magistrate (who wears a three-cornered hat) who tries to seduce her. But the oafish magistrate is constantly thwarted and suffers repeated embarrassments. De Falla included traditional Spanish folk dances into his ballet score like the fandango, seguidilla, farruca and the jota. The 1919 premiere in London featured collaborators of the highest order: de Falla's music, choreography by Léonide Massine (who also danced the role of the miller) and sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso. It was a smashing success and established de Falla as an international celebrity. A Suite of the music from The Three-Cornered Hat is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
