Admiral Horatio Nelson by Lemuel Francis Abbott (1799)
Franz Joseph Haydn was at the peak of his creative powers and fame in 1798. But the outer world was upside down. Napoleon had won major battles in Austria and Vienna itself was threatened and the population fearful. It was at this time when he composed what Haydn's chief biographer, H.C. Robbins, described as "arguably Haydn's greatest single composition," the Missa in Angustiis (Mass for troubled times). The mass consists of six movements; the text, slightly altered, is taken from the Latin Mass of the Catholic church. But just as Haydn had completed the work came news that Napoleon had suffered a resounding defeat in Egypt at the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. With the premiere of Haydn's Mass coincident with this enormously consequential battle, Haydn's masterpiece came to be known as the "Lord Nelson Mass." This stunning masterwork is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
