Ferdinand Ries by Carl Mayer (appx pre-1830)
Court musician at Bonn, Franz Anton Ries [1755-1846], gave music lessons to a young boy also born in Bonn, Ludwig van Beethoven [1770-1827]. Franz Ries had a son Ferdinand Ries [1784-1838] who, in 1802, penniless and blind in one eye from smallpox, arrived in Vienna where Beethoven was now living and kindly took in young Ferdinand, son of his former teacher in Bonn. Young Ries would soon become Beethoven’s pupil and secretary, assisting in all manner of needs from housing to correspondence to music copying and so on and became indispensable to Beethoven especially as his hearing diminished. Accounts are mixed on how Beethoven treated young Ries personally at times, but to his dying day Ries admired his teacher and later, as a successful pianist, often included Beethoven’s music on his own concert programs. Ten years after Beethoven’s death in 1827, Ries published accounts of Beethoven that are today considered reliable and valuable. The Piano Concerto #2 from 1808 by Ferdinand Ries is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
