Igor Stravinsky (L) and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (R) in 1908
Igor Stravinsky's first composition for orchestra was also his first published work, his Opus 1 Symphony in E-Flat. Composed during his three years of private study with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the music shows his influence as well as echoes of Glazunov, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. While the symphony may offer little of the innovative "Stravinsky" we know from his later works, it is very pleasant listening. And it's today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
