The 18 year-old Mozart composed his eight-movement Serenade #4 for graduation ceremonies at a Salzburg university. Likely to have been performed outdoors as background music and only a couple times and therefore “throwaway music” if not re-used, Mozart cleverly extracted three central movements and published them as a violin concerto, and a "Symphony” from four other movements (though, today, we don’t recognize that as one of his official symphonies). Showing originality yet in a light “background music” informal style, the entire Serenade #4 by Mozart is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
