Scene from a 1926 film of "Der Rosenkavalier"
Even though the Richard Strauss opera Der Rosenkavalier from 1911 is set in Vienna about a hundred years before Johann Strauss, Jr popularized the waltz, Strauss included ample new music in ¾ time in his opera as a nostalgic nod to 19th century Vienna. In 1945 Richard Strauss didn’t arrange, but did approve, the creation of a Concert Suite of music from his opera. The Rosenkavalier Concert Suite is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
