Haydn composed his stately yet cheery Cello Concerto #1 about ten years after the death of Bach so it still has a baroque sensibility to it while also beginning to look forward. It was also lost for 200 years until it was discovered in a Prague museum. The cellist who premiered the Concerto in the United States in 1964, Mischa Maisky, is the soloist in Haydn’s early Cello Concerto #1 for your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
