Each movement of composer Erich Korngold’s 1945 Violin Concerto takes its main (and secondary) theme from melodies used in his earlier film scores between 1936 and 1939. The 1947 premiere with soloist Jascha Heifetz was a smashing success and the Concerto soon entered the standard repertoire. Hear it with soloist Gil Shaham as today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm
