Edward MacDowell | photo: Library of Congress
The first major piano concerto by an American was written in 1885 by a composer who by 1896 was considered America’s finest at the time, Edward MacDowell. This was actually his 2nd Piano Concerto, the first having been a student work. Legendary 20th century pianist Van Cliburn played MacDowell’s 2nd Concerto for his professional debut at age 18, and you’ll hear him play it for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
