A still from the 1933 Russian film Lieutenant Kije (Поручик Киже)
Appearing first in Russian literature, the military “Lieutenant Kije” was born from an administrative error and his reputation grew as people said how much they admired him even though he didn’t really exist. In 1933, Sergei Prokofiev composed music for the Russian movie version of the absurd story, and his “Lieutenant Kije Suite” of music from the film is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
