Preparation for the witches' sabbath. Etching by D. Vivant-Denon after D. Teniers the younger.
The Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz is a programmatic work that musically describes an artist’s passion for a beautiful woman. Unrequited, his passion turns self-destructive; he takes opium, and dreams a series of fantastic sequences including his own hanging at the gallows which, as the dreamer, he watches. Leonard Bernstein described this scene: “You take a drug and you wind up screaming at your own funeral.” The entire Symphonie fantastique is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm as we head into the Halloween weekend!
