Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Robert Schumann composed his Cello Concerto in a-minor in 1850 shortly after he became music director for the city orchestra in Düsseldorf. He didn't last long in that position as this was late in his life and he was showing inability to concentrate on his duties as he began his final descent into the psychological problems that would put him into an institution where he would die in 1856. The Cello Concerto never was performed in his lifetime. It premiered in 1860; four years after his death and on the 50th anniversary of his birth. It languished mostly unplayed until the end of the 19th century and now many cellists consider it one of the great concertos. Schumann's Cello Concerto is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
