Classical Music Playlist, November 22, 2021
Mozart was the darling of Vienna in about 1785 and audiences awaited anything he’d compose. This admiration didn’t last into the 19th century, however, when the Romantics wanted more drama than much of his charming and seemingly innocent music could provide. Except for his d-minor Piano Concerto #20 (K. 466) which was so much a bit of dramatic Romanticism from the Classical era that Beethoven performed it regularly and composed cadenzas for it, as did Brahms and Clara Schumann and others. Even classically-trained jazz pianist Keith Jarrett has recorded it, and that recording is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
