As brief as Mozart’s life was (35), the young man they called “The Spanish Mozart” lived only about half as long, until age 19. Therefore, we have very little music by Juan Arriaga (who also happens to share the same birthday with Mozart, but 50 years later). A prodigy, without musical training he composed an opera at age 15; Spanish patrons recognized his talent and paid his way to attend the Paris Conservatory, where he graduated in just three years then wrote and published three string quartets, one symphony and a handful of other music. Hear Juan Arriaga’s tuneful Symphony in d-minor for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
