George Frideric Handel (arm extended) with King George I during the trip down the River Thames in 1717. Painting by Edouard Hamman (1819–88).
At about 8pm on the 17th of July 1717, King George I boarded his barge at London and floated with the tide to Chelsea. Only about 4 miles, the trip took three hours during which time music composed specifically for the trip by George Friedrich Handel was played on accompanying barges alongside the king’s. This music later became known as Handel’s “Water Music” and divided into three Suites. The Suite #1 of Handel’s “Water Music” is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
