Cast for the 1919 premiere performance of Claude Debussy’s ballet "La boîte à joujoux."
Taking delight in children's subject matter, probably due to his affection for his young daughter, in 1913 Claude Debussy agreed to compose a ballet based on a children's story, La boîte à joujoux (The Toy-Box), to be danced by children (or marionettes). That same year he wrote the piano score and began its orchestration in 1914, but performance was delayed by World War I. Debussy passed away in 1918 and the ballet, with orchestration completed by Debussy's friend, composer and conductor André Caplet, finally had its premiere in December 1919 and is now considered one of Debussy's greatest achievements. La boîte à joujoux (The Toy-Box) is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2pm.
