Composer Howard Hanson (1896-1981)
American composer Howard Hanson wrote his 1930 Second Symphony in an easily-listenable style as a reaction against modernism that was taking over music. And it’s been popular ever since. Filmmakers have even used it. The symphony’s first movement plays during the end credits of the 1979 movie “Alien,” and John Williams used the Symphony’s third movement as a model for his original music in the movie “E.T.” when the kids go flying on their bicycles. The Symphony #2, the “Romantic,” by Howard Hanson is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00pm.
