As Finnish composer Jean Sibelius was writing his first symphony in the late 1890s, Russia took steps to limit Finland's self-governance as an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. Not a political man but a Finnish patriot that wanted to tell the world that Finland's independent culture was unique and worth fighting for, Sibelius spoke with music. Among many nationalist works that he composed at this time, his Symphony #1 had its premiere in April 1899. He made revisions with a re-premiere in July 1900 and this is the version the world has come to know, and is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm. (Finland won its full independence in 1917.)
