It was once attributed to Haydn, though now Leopold Mozart is generally credited but even that remains in question. The charming “Toy Symphony” that first appeared about 1760 may even have been written as short pieces by professional and amateur musicians near a German city famous for manufacturing toy musical instruments, perhaps as demonstration pieces. No one knows for sure who wrote it; but what is sure is that with appearances of a toy trumpet, ratchet, bird calls and various percussion, it’s charming fun and often heard today around the holidays. The Toy Symphony by ______ is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
