Ralph Vaughan Williams (1921) by E. O. Hoppé
The pastoral yet somber sound of "The Lark Ascending" from 1914 by Ralph Vaughan Williams depicts the disruption soon to fall upon England with the arrival of World War I, which the composer saw on the horizon. Composed as a reminder of just how beautiful England can be (versus the ugliness that was about to happen), "The Lark Ascending" is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
