Classical Music Playlist, January 3, 2022
The child of a father from a deeply religious Roman Catholic family and a mother from a free-thinking artistic family, French composer Francis Poulenc was a man of dual personalities with his music shaped by these influences. His earlier works have a merry impudent humor while the untimely deaths of two friends later in his life reawakened his spiritual side. From this period he composed his 1950 Stabat Mater, a setting of the 13th century Catholic hymn that meditates on the suffering of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, during his crucifixion. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
