Portrait of Jean and Geneviève Caillebotte by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1895)
Inspired by tales of Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast and more, Maurice Ravel wrote his "Mother Goose Suite'' originally for piano four-hands for the two children of his closest friends and hoped that they would perform the premiere but, at no older than 10, they were too frightened. Ravel orchestrated it in 1911. In 1912 he expanded it into a ballet and added movements and you’ll hear that ballet version of “Mother Goose” for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
