Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Felix Mendelssohn loved Italy when he toured through Europe. About that time, the Philharmonic Society in London commissioned him to write a symphony which he began composing in Rome. The result was his Symphony #4, which he titled the “Italian” Symphony. Even the slow movement is more like a respectful pause to watch a street procession rather than anything particularly somber, and he included lively and tuneful traditional Italian dances in the final movement. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
