After accepting a commission by an amateur Dutch flutist for three flute concerti and some flute quartets, Mozart struggled to meet the deadline. He wrote to his father, “…you know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument that I cannot bear.” That is, the flute. Mozart was not a fan. He never completed all the commissioned works (and, thus, was paid less than the agreed upon fee), but despite his dislike of the instrument Mozart’s Flute Concerto #1 has become a staple in the repertoire. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
