Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880. Source: Library of Congress
Tchaikovsky married - disastrously - while writing his 4th Symphony. The emotion of that (mis)adventure is depicted in the music. He described the symphony's opening theme as "the fateful power of Destiny that rules our life and so often stands in the way of our happiness." The marriage lasted only two months and caused him a nervous breakdown which, to get over, he went to rest in Italy where he completed the symphony. He later wrote to his patron Nadezhda von Meck about the finished music, "The symphony is a true reflection of my feelings at the time....my intense and frightening innermost experiences" (including, one would assume, release from the marriage as reflected in the triumphant final movement). He also wrote, “No previous orchestral piece has required so much labor, but neither have I ever been so enthralled by the work. This symphony seems to me to be something out of the ordinary and to be the best that I have yet achieved.” Indeed, it is the first of three successive symphonies widely regarded as his masterpieces. Hear the Symphony #4 by Tchaikovsky today at 2:00pm.
