It’s mind-boggling to think that when Mozart composed his only Clarinet Quintet (K. 581) in 1789, his esteem in Vienna had fallen so low that he was writing uncredited arias for operas by lesser composers, needed to borrow money because his wife was ill with a difficult pregnancy (their child would die an hour after birth), and even the clarinetist for whom he wrote the Quintet earned more than him. And though there are some musical moments that reflect his emotions during this most unhappy year, the sunny Mozart optimism shines through the tuneful Clarinet Quintet. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
