Born into a musical Brooklyn, NY, family in 1825, prodigy George Frederick Bristow took his first musical instruction (in piano, violin and composition) from his musician-conductor father. At age 17 he joined the New York Philharmonic in the First Violin section where he remained until 1879, being Concertmaster from 1850-1853. Over 35 years in this position gave him invaluable exposure to the greatest composers, conductors and fellow musicians from around the world. From the 1850s he also became conductor of church choirs and choral groups for whom he wrote secular works with nationalist American texts like, "Great Republic: Ode to the American Union," "Pioneer, a Grand Cantata," and "Keep Step with the Music of Union." Bristow was a lifelong champion of American music and receives attention as one of the earliest great American composers. With a “Nocturno” 2nd movement and “The Butterfly’s Frolic” scherzo 3rd, Bristow’s 1858 Symphony #3 in f-sharp minor is today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
