Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927)
Born in 1871, the 150th birthday of Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar was celebrated with a two-week festival in Sweden in the Fall of 2021. The 151st anniversary of his birth is coming up on February 7th. Stenhammar was born into a musical family and formally studied organ and piano, becoming the greatest Swedish pianist of his time. But he studied composition mostly on his own. Despite having already written many songs and chamber works, by 1910 he struggled with self doubt as a composer. Feeling his knowledge of music theory insufficient, he set himself thousands of assignments in counterpoint over the next decade. In about the middle of this period, he composed his Symphony #2 that shows his preoccupation with counterpoint especially in the final movement with its double fugue. Stenhammar dedicated his 1915 Second Symphony to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra for which he was Music Director for 15 seasons beginning in 1907, and who perform the Symphony for today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
