Born in Kiev in 1875, composer Reinhold Glière first received lessons at home, then the Kiev Conservatory before entering the Moscow Conservatory in 1894 where his teachers included some of the greatest Russian composer-teachers of the late 19th century: composition with Taneyev, harmony from Arensky and orchestration from Ippolitov-Ivanov. He graduated in 1900 with high honors. During his final student year in Moscow he composed his First Symphony, which is textbook in its 19th century Romantic structure and colorfully orchestrated. It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
