One critic called it the “Symphony of the Celestial City.” Less charitably, Aaron Copland once joked that "Listening to the fifth symphony of Ralph Vaughan Williams is like staring at a cow for 45 minutes."
Copland was kidding, but there’s no doubt that Vaughan Williams’s music was inspired by the green and peaceful English countryside. His work premiered in 1943 as World War II was raging, and the symphony intentionally looks away from that conflict to an alternate world of serenity, light, and even a little mystery.
Today, you too can step through this portal and lose yourself in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 5, your Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
