Though George Gerswhin arranged his own suite of music from his opera “Porgy and Bess” titled “Catfish Row,” after his death Robert Russell Bennett compiled the “Porgy and Bess Symphonic Picture” using the opera’s best known songs. This he compiled at the request of conductor Fritz Reiner who premiered the new suite with the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1943. Bennett was a friend of Gershwin’s who had orchestrated several of his Broadway shows, so he was a natural to create the new “Symphonic Picture.” It’s today’s Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
