Aaron Copland in 1942 photo: Library of Congress | Flag photo by Michael Browning on Unsplash
In notes about his Third Symphony that he composed during WW II and premiered just after, Aaron Copland wrote that it was his desire "to give the Third Symphony an affirmative tone. After all, it was a wartime piece—or more accurately, an end-of-war piece—intended to reflect the euphoric spirit of the country at the time." And, to emphasize this, in the final movement he made use of his popular 1942 Fanfare for the Common Man about which, Copland has said, “It was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work in the war and the army. He deserved a fanfare.” The premiering conductor, Serge Koussevitzky said, "There is no doubt about it — this is the greatest American symphony. It goes from the heart to the heart."
Aaron Copland's Third Symphony is today's Midday Masterpiece at 2:00 pm.
