Classical Music Playlist, February 24, 2022
The palace orchestra of Franz Joseph Haydn’s employer lost two horn players, one in 1763 and another in early 1765. But despite Haydn’s urging, the employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, didn’t replace them until May 1765. Soon afterward, Haydn composed his Symphony #31, known as the “Hornsignal” symphony, to celebrate the new hires and show off the once again full horn section. You’ll hear this music, complete with natural horns of Haydn’s time, as your Midday Masterpiece today at 2:00 pm.
