We kick off Women's History Month with our featured artists of the day. French composer and harpist Henriette Renié was born in Paris in 1875 and passed away on this date, March 1st, in 1956. She is known not only for her compositions but the method of playing the harp she innovated that is still in use today. You'll hear her compositions and transcriptions throughout the day.
American conductor JoAnne Falletta (born in Queens, NY, 1954) is the multiple Grammy-winning Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and holds posts with other American orchestras. Upon her appointment in Buffalo, Falletta became the first woman to lead a major American ensemble and was recently named one of the “Fifty Great Conductors,” past and present, by Gramophone Magazine. You'll hear her conduct different ensembles throughout the day, including the Bay Area Women's Philharmonic, and she conducts the Tchaikovsky Symphony #5 with the Buffalo Philharmonic today at 2:00 pm.
